Very Important Person (VIP)

VIP in a hotel means a guest who gets extra attention. Who qualifies, VIP levels from VIP 1 to VVIP, what the team prepares and how VIPs are flagged.

What does VIP mean in a hotel?

In a hotel, a VIP (very important person) is a guest who receives extra attention because of who they are or what they mean to the property, such as a loyal repeat guest, a senior executive, a celebrity or a key travel partner. The team marks VIPs on the reservation so every department knows to prepare more than the standard stay.

VIP levels are set by each hotel: a typical scale from repeat guest to VVIP.

What qualifies someone as a VIP at a hotel?

VIP status is decided by the hotel, not by the guest. It usually goes to guests with influence or value to the property, for example:

  • Repeat guests and members of the top tiers of a loyalty programme
  • Senior managers of key corporate accounts (some hotels call them CIPs, commercially important persons)
  • Celebrities, politicians and other public figures
  • Journalists, influencers and travel agents on a familiarisation trip
  • Guests celebrating an occasion, such as a honeymoon or an anniversary
  • Owners, board members and senior managers of the hotel company

VIP levels and codes

Most hotels grade VIPs so the team knows how much to prepare. A common scale runs from VIP 1 (a welcome note and known preferences) to VIP 3 (room inspected by a manager, personal welcome on arrival), with VVIP for heads of state or celebrities who need a suite, private check-in and security. The codes are internal and differ from hotel to hotel. The front office usually shares the list of VIP arrivals in the morning briefing, so housekeeping, the restaurant and the concierge prepare for the same guests.

What benefits do VIP guests receive at hotels?

VIP guests often receive priority check-in and check-out, a room upgrade when one is available, a welcome amenity in the room, personal concierge or butler service, and a greeting from the general manager or front office manager. Just as important is recognition: the team knows the guest's name, their last stay and what they asked for, without the guest having to repeat it.

VIP guests in guest communication

VIP service depends on what the team knows before the guest walks in: the pillow they asked for last year, the arrival time, the anniversary. That knowledge is often spread across the PMS, an email thread and one colleague's memory. In chatlyn's hotel CRM, each guest has one record with their stays from the PMS, their conversations on WhatsApp, email and the website chat, and the team's notes. A custom field such as "VIP level", combined with the filter "arriving in the next 7 days", gives the front office a live list of VIP arrivals for the morning briefing.

A pre-arrival message a few days before the stay then asks what the guest would like prepared, and the answer lands on the same record for the next visit.

Personal service can also scale without automation. At The St. Regis Le Morne Resort in Mauritius, where every suite comes with a butler, 30 butlers answer guests on one WhatsApp number, each conversation routed to the butler of that suite and every reply written personally (read the case study). FAQs

What does VIP stand for in a hotel?

VIP stands for very important person: a guest the hotel singles out for extra attention, from a welcome note to a personal greeting by the general manager.

What is a VVIP guest?

A VVIP (very, very important person) is the highest level on most hotel VIP scales, used for heads of state, royalty and major celebrities. It usually involves a suite, private check-in, discretion and coordination with security teams.

How does a hotel know that a guest is a VIP?

The reservations team, sales, the front office manager or the general manager flags the guest on the booking, based on loyalty status, previous stays, company or public profile. The flag and the guest's preferences are kept on the guest profile for future stays.

Do VIP guests pay more?

Not necessarily. VIP status is about attention, not about the rate: a VIP may pay the standard rate, a corporate rate or nothing at all, as on a familiarisation trip.
